Torsten Reimer

Torsten Reimer completed a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in psychology at Free University of Berlin, a habilitation degree in cognitive psychology at the University of Basel, and a B.A. in philosophy and linguistics at the University of Tuebingen. He directs the Communication and Cognition Lab, which employs psychological methods to test theories about communication and decision making.

Dr. Reimer’s research program explores how communication principles facilitate decision making by guiding information processing and reducing information overload. Applied topics include the design of persuasive messages and risk communication.

Before moving to the U.S., Reimer worked as a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. For his research and teaching, he received several awards including the College of Psychology’s Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Basel, the Golden Anniversary Monograph Award from the National Communication Association, and the Dennis Gouran Award from the Group Communication Division of NCA. His recent work has appeared in Communication Monographs, Computers in Human Behavior, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Theory, and Communication Studies, among other publications.
