Silvia Mitchell completed a Ph.D. in history at the University of Miami and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in history at Florida International University. She teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate history, research seminar, and communication classes at Purdue. 

Dr. Mitchell is a historian of early modern European history, and her research focuses on the Spanish Monarchy in the later 17th century. Her work displays the importance of Spain in international politics during this time. She also studies women of the Royal House of Habsburg from cultural, dynastic, and political perspectives. 

Her Queen Mother, and Stateswoman: Mariana of Austria and the Government of Spain is the first detailed study of the exile and regency of the Austrian royalty, Queen Mariana. Her publications also include The Spanish Habsburg Court during the Reign of Carlos II, which she guest edited for The Court Historian: The International Journal of Court Studies.
