Why did you apply to intern at your particular organization?
I had always thought that it would be cool to work at a newspaper. Thankfully, I was able to do so in my own hometown, and it was really cool! I decided to apply to The Herald Republican because I had grown up reading it and had always wanted to contribute. It was really cool being able to see “By Aubrey Hunt” in print. To me, it was a big deal.
What has been your most meaningful internship experience?
There are really too many to count. As a reporter, I was able to enjoy so many amazing opportunities that took place in my hometown. From hot air balloon festivals or campfire s’more celebrations, I was never bored. It was exciting getting to write for a place I had spent 20 years in already, but this time I got a different view.
What is the hardest aspect of your internship?
I think one of the hardest things I faced was learning to work with others who were so much older than me. It was a very different experience, but I think it gave me great practice for when I eventually enter the workforce.
How has your internship prepared you for your career?
My summer internship taught me a lot about writing professionally for a larger audience. Although my hometown is small, I had never written for that many people at once. I learned how to write in a way that was straightforward, fair, and engaging. It was a really good experience to have because it helped me better define what I really want to do for the rest of my life.
