Welcome Dr. Brian Kogelmann!
The Department is delighted to welcome to faculty Dr. Brian Kogelmann, Associate Professor of Political Science and Philosophy! Dr. Kogelmann brings a rich research agenda at the intersection of ethics and political economy. He is particularly excited to be working on a project that explores the ethics of creative destruction: “AI is changing the world fast. Some predict it will result in massive job losses and the devaluation of human capital. Suppose you spend $100,000 getting an undergraduate degree, but five years later AI substitutes your labor. What should we think about this from the moral point of view?”
His most recent article, with collaborator Hun Chung, “Formal Models in Normative Political Theory” is forthcoming in the Journal of Theoretical Politics. It explores how and why political theorists should use formal tools in their work, productively adopting the methods of modern political science. His extensive body of research on a range of topics has been published in many top journals, including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Public Choice, Journal of Business Ethics, Politics, Philosophy & Economics, Journal of the American Philosophical ‘association, and Social Theory and Practice, to name just a few.
When asked about why he joined Purdue, he replied “Program building! I love novel, interdisciplinary undergraduate programming. From the Cornerstone program to the new AI degree in the Philosophy Department to the developing PPE major, there’s a lot of exciting stuff happening in West Lafayette.”
Dr. Kogelmann received his PhD from the University of Arizona. He is an Affiliated Fellow at the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Studies in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University.
