Thomas Broden received his master’s and Ph.D. in French from Indiana University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. He also studied at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, seminar and workshops directed by A. J. Greimas; Collège de France, seminar by Roland Barthes; Université de Haute Bretagne, licence program; Université de Paris III Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Institut de Civilisation et de Langue Françaises; Certificat supérieur, Master’s program for foreign students and teachers; Université Catholique de l'Ouest, Angers.

Broden is a scholar of international standing in semiotics. He has a particular research focus on linguist and semiotician A.J. Greimas and published a critical edition of Greimas’ early articles with the most important academic press in France. He has refereed multiple journal articles and contributed to collective works or proceedings. His biography of Greimas will appear first in Lithuanian this year.

Broden has held a year-long National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship. The French government inducted him as a Knight of the Order of the Palmes Academiques.
