Brian Lamb School of Communication
Seungyoon Lee completed a Ph.D. and master’s degree in communication at the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in communication at Yonsei University. She joined Purdue’s faculty in 2009 and received tenure in 2015.
Lee’s research interest focuses on the evolution of communication, knowledge, and collaboration networks in and across organizations over time. Her current emphasis is on applying theories of socio-cultural evolution to complex forms of networks including multiplex and multimodal networks. Her ongoing projects examine the evolution of creative interaction and social ties in project teams; the role of network ties among people and organizations in disaster recovery; and the determinants and outcomes of multiplex ties in various settings.
Lee is passionate about bringing insights from research to both undergraduate and graduate students in the Brian Lamb School of Communication and in other majors. She teaches courses on social network analysis, organizational communication, and research methods and statistics. She has also designed new courses on theories of resilience (Com 674, Building Resilience) as well as on resilience in the practical contexts of disaster preparation and management (Honr 399/Com 495/496, Disaster Resilience and Society).
Lee was named the 2019 - 2021 Ann and Charles Redding Faculty Fellow, in recognition of research productivity and impact in the Lamb School. Her research program is supported by external grant funding. She supports and mentors graduate students on the research process including sharing authorship opportunities with them.
