Huai-Rhin Kim is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Korean Program in the School of Languages and Cultures. She also serves as Director of the Purdue Interdisciplinary Center for Korean Studies (PICKS) and the Purdue King Sejong Institute, and as a Faculty Fellow in the John Martinson Honors College. She teaches Korean language courses as well as courses on Korean culture and society, Korean cinema, and Korean food culture.
Her primary research interest, and the focus of her dissertation, is the cultural perspective on writing evaluation of bilingual children. More broadly, she pursues research in second language acquisition, bilingualism, and Korean language education, with a special focus on Korean language learners and teaching Korean as a foreign language. Building on this foundation, her current projects explore the integration of artificial intelligence into language education, including AI-and robot-based personalized learning systems, immersivemultimodal human-AI interaction, and speech-based systems that support vocabulary and pronunciation developement.
Kim received the SLC Excellence in Teaching Awardy and the CLA Outstanding Lecturer Award in 2023. She was also selected for the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award for 2025-2026, awarded by the College of Liberal Arts in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching based on student and faculty nominations, teaching evaluations, scholarly excellence, and peer review.
