John J. Contreni received the Ph.D. degree in August 1971, from Michigan State University and joined Purdue's Department of History the following month. He retired after teaching 45 years at Purdue. His personal favorite course was the introductory medieval history survey course. He also offered undergraduate courses on the World of Charlemagne, Medieval Culture, The Crusades, and Studies in Medieval History. His graduate seminars focused on late antiquity and the Carolingian age. His research explores the intellectual, religious, and political culture of the early medieval period (fifth to eleventh centuries) with special emphasis on the manuscripts, schools, and texts of Carolingian Europe.
