Rauh obtained his PhD in Ancient History in 1986 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught with the Department of History at Purdue from 1987 to 2005 and with the Classics Department in the School of Languages and Cultures from 2005-2024. In 1997 he was awarded the Charles B. Murphy Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching. His archaeological field experience includes excavation work at Delos and Isthmia (Greece), and field surveys at Plataia (Greece), Gazipasha (Turkey), and Boğsak (Turkey). From 1996 to 2014 he directed the Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project in Gazipasha. Since 2014 he has assisted Prof. Günder Varinlioğlu of Mimar Sinan Univerisity (Istanbul) with the Boğsak Archaeological Survey Project in Boğsak, Turkey. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Endownment for the Humanities, the National Geographic Society, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, the Kress Foundation, the American Research Institute in Turkey, the Turkish Fulbright Commission, the Suna & İnan Kıraç Mediterranean Civilizations Research Center, and the Georges Lurcy Foundation. He has published three books, sixty articles and survey reports, and fifty survey pottery datasets at the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR).
