Elena Benedicto completed a Ph.D. in linguistics and syntax at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a Ph.D. and bachelor’s degree in Latin syntax at the Universitat de Barcelona. Her work reflects a combined interest for the formal analysis of human language and the exploration of the linguist’s social responsibility toward the language community in which they work.
Her research revolves around two major areas: theoretical issues in syntax and methodological and ethical issues.
A Purdue faculty member since 1997, Benedicto directs the Indigenous and Endangered Languages Lab (IELLab) and is a member of the linguistics program and the English language and linguistics program. She also collaborates with the programs for women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, classics, and medieval and Renaissance studies.
Benedicto teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on syntax, Native American languages, field methods in linguistics, and global collaborations.
