Kevin Stainback completed a Ph.D. and master’s degree at North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s at Appalachian State University, all in sociology. The primary area of his research – which has been featured in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Harvard Business Review – examines racial and gender inequality in jobs, work, and organizations.

A Department of Sociology faculty member since 2009, Stainback is also a faculty affiliate in American studies; women’s gender, and sexuality studies; and with the African American Studies and Research Center.

In addition to his many published articles, chapters and other scholarly writings, Stainback co-wrote Documenting Desegregation: Racial and Gender Segregation in Private Sector Employment Since the Civil Rights Act (Russell Sage Foundation, 2012) with Donald Tomaskovic-Devey. Stainback has served as a reviewer with numerous academic publications and haa worked as an editorial board member with American Sociological Review and Sociology Compass.

Stainback and Tomaskovic-Devey received National Science Foundation grants in 2007-08 and 2011-12, and another from the Russell Sage Foundation in 2005-07. Stainback also won the Daryl P. Evans Outstanding Teaching Award from the Department of Sociology in 2010.
