Jennifer Freeman Marshall received a Ph.D. in women’s studies from Emory University, a master’s in anthropology from Georgia State University, and a bachelor’s in English from Spelman College. She holds academic appointments as an associate professor in English and in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. She is an affiliated faculty member in African-American studies and American studies.

Freeman Marshall is a decorated faculty member, having won the women’s gender, and sexuality studies Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award (2014-15), the English department’s Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award (2013-14), and Purdue’s Teaching for Tomorrow Award (2013-14). She was also nominated for the 2015-16 Exceptional Early Career Teaching Award by the English Excellence in Teaching Committee and was a faculty participant in the National Women’s Studies Association Women of Color Leadership Project in 2013 and 2014.

Among her published works is the entry on Ellen Irene Diggs in the second volume of the African American National Biography (Oxford, 2008), edited by Henry Louis Gates and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham.

She holds professional memberships with the National Women’s Studies Association, the NWSA’s Women of Color Caucus, the Modern Language Association, the Reception Studies Society, and the American Anthropology Association.
