Equipping students with the tools to explore their next giant leap

Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts is an innovative and globally recognized certificate model that demonstrates the ongoing significance of the humanities and social sciences in today’s 21st century global economy. We seek to develop engaged Purdue graduates who can write clearly, speak with confidence, and engage with differing viewpoints. These skills add depth to the college experience and prepare students for the workplace and everyday life.

Mission & Vision

The mission of Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts is to share the wisdom and vision of the liberal arts with all Purdue undergraduates. Cornerstone sits at the intersection of liberal arts and STEM, and develops innovative thinkers and insightful leaders.

In this program, Cornerstone faculty help students develop the following skills:

  • Reading: to read closely and critically with one’s full attention, valuing learning for its own sake.
  • Writing: to articulate one’s thoughts in an organized and clear manner that engages and values the reader.
  • Speaking: to speak with clarity and eloquence in a manner that engages and values the listener.
  • Listening: to listen with appreciation and curiosity to others and value their thoughts.
  • Understanding: to appreciate the wisdom, feelings, and life experiences of others and seeking to learn from them.

Alongside an official certificate noted on a student’s transcript, other benefits include:

  • Having a competitive edge in the job market
  • Developing a unique, multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and critical thinking
  • Adding depth to an academic major by pursuing classes that fit a student’s interests
