                Line: blind contour, contour, consistent, expressive, calligraphic (tools vary)

                Exercise:  reframe contour line drawings for balance, figure/ground relationship

                Homework:  contour line drawings of hands and objects

January 16-19 

Week 2:  Line and shape/Intro to Gesture

               Pinecone:  Drawing 1: gesture and structure

                                 Drawing 2: organic structure and building form and tone with line

               Homework: Popcorn using line (multiple views with a variety of approaches)

               Reading #3 Line and its Expression and Sketching and the Power of Influences

Materials needed for next week: small sheet of watercolor paper (135lb or more)

 

January 22-26

Week 3: Value Scale Exercises: 1.Shading with pencil 2.Ink washes 3.Mark making.

               Handout:  How to build a sense of volume

               Value Study 1:  Eggs and shadows (shading/toning)

               Value Study 2: Square of striped cloth (ink wash and pen drawings)

               Homework:  Folded paper value study in pencil on half sheet of paper

               Reading #4 Value

 

January 29-Feb 2

Week 4:  Part 1: Organizational Line and Sighting

               Part 2: (on same page) Directional Line to create tone

               Reading #5 Color and Value

               Sketchbook Value Study #1: polyhedron and sphere (one in monochrome)

               Sketchbook Study: Pos/Neg emphasis on background (color applied/layered)

February 5-9 (Undergraduate Exhibition submission Feb 5-8)

Week 5:  Gestures (students pose): Mixed methods and tools.

               Reading #6 Composition

               Focus on Negative Space and Value and Color

               Sketchbook: Branches (3 pages)

 

February 12-16

Week 6:  Continuation of Focus on Negative Space and Color and Value

               Exercise: Warm up for Object Study

               Begin:  Object Study (series of 3 drawings) with varied methods and materials
