Department of Theatre hosts Location Sound Recording Workshop
On Saturday, February 19, 2022, Purdue’s Department of Theatre hosted a “Location Sound Recording Workshop” with Purdue alum Jeff Mack. Jeff is a Texas-based Location Sound Mixer who has worked in reality TV (Duck Dynasty, Gold Rush, Fast N’ Loud, Real Housewives), cooking and home improvement shows (House Hunters, Fixer to Fabulous, Tiny House Nation, The Food Network), news/information/true crime shows (20/20, 48 Hours, Dateline NBC, interviews with prominent figures such as former president George W. Bush), corporate branding projects, documentaries, and many more.
He introduced students to the role of Location Sound Mixer, and all of the tasks and challenges of the job. Jeff demonstrated the use of his state-of-the-art professional equipment (including his portable mixer/recorder, boom mics, wireless mics, “camera hop” systems, talent and producer “IFB” monitor systems, digital smart scene slate, among others), and gave the students both practical tips and tricks and advice on how to get into the business, make a living, and networking best practices.
Students from the graduate sound program, the Sound for the Performing Arts and Film and Video Studies majors, and others were invited to attend. At the end of the workshop, students were given the opportunity to wear Jeff’s portable mixing harness while he gave them tips on how to use the rig and operate the boom microphone. Thank you to Jeff for giving back to Purdue in this extra special way!
