Purdue Galleries exhibits popular photographer Mayan Toledano
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Galleries is unveiling the new temporary exhibit "No Mames," featuring the work of renowned photographer Mayan Toledano.
Mayan Toledano is a New York-based director and photographer who has produced a wide range of work, from editorial campaigns to reportage, intimate portraiture and film.
Toledano’s "No Mames" captures the vibrant, earnest lives of her friends in Mexico City’s LGBTQ+ communities. Her work ranges from candid shots to ethereal vignettes, showcasing love, friendship and joy in this singular body of work.
Toledano's work encompasses themes such as gender identity, gay culture, the female body, intimacy and relationships, and is characterized by humanity and empathy. She has worked with clients including Kenzo, Nike, Chanel, Gucci, Coach, Pat McGrath, MadeMe and American Eagle. Her work has been featured in editorial outlets such as i-D, Vogue, W, Teen Vogue, Sneeze, Them and The New York Times.
This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Latino Cultural Center, the LGBTQ Center, and the photography faculty at the Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance.
“Toledano invites us into intimate moments of the queer scene in Mexico City, where tenderness blooms—whether in a soft kiss, a playful selfie, or simply the quiet power of presence. Through her art, we see not strangers but reflections of our familia and amigues—familiar faces in a shared dream,” said Carina Olaru, director of the Latino Cultural Center and director of student advocacy and education at Purdue University.
The gallery will be open and free to the public from Oct. 21 through Dec. 12, 2023, in the Robert L. Ringel Gallery located in the Stewart Center. Toledano will also visit Purdue’s campus later this semester, with details to be announced.
