The Portrait Unveiling of Helen Bass Williams
We recently celebrated public health worker, civil rights leader, and Purdue faculty member, Helen Bass Williams on January 26th.
Professor Williams was an extraordinary figure in Purdue University's history and was the first African American faculty. During her time at Purdue, she taught French, and counseled minority students in the School of Humanities, Social Science, and Education (HSSE). Professor Williams contributed greatly to the creation of the Learning Center (Helen Bass Williams Academic Center), the establishment of the Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff, and the Black Cultural Center. Learn more about her life and other significant Black historical figures in our Black and Gold: Black History at Purdue Walking Tour.
