Communications Intern, IndyEleven

1.) How did you learn about this internship opportunity?

I learned about this opportunity through a platform called Teamworks Online. However, I knew to look at Indy Eleven for positions because I made an appointment at the CLA Career Center! Thank goodness for Abby Croft!

2.) How has your internship helped build your skills and clarify your career goals?  How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills to your internship?

My internship allowed me to work in sports somewhere other than Purdue. I love working at Purdue, but this internship allowed me to connect with new people at the professional level. My liberal arts skills were applied in every part of my internship including writing press releases, communicating with strangers, and being creative on social media platforms.

3.) What is a piece of advice you would give someone looking for an internship?

I would tell someone looking for an internship to talk to the people around them. Whether it's your friends, family, or professors, reach out and tell them what you are interested in pursuing. Everyone knows someone and the professional world is small.

4.) What specific responsibilities have you undertaken during your internship?

During my internship, I worked game days for the Indy Eleven Soccer Team as well as in the main office in downtown Indianapolis. I got to write press releases, conduct research, run media will call, work with outside media and so much more. Every day was something new.

5.) In what ways has the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University supported your internship journey? How has your participating in our job-ready program specifically aided your professional development?

As I mentioned before, working with the CLA Career Center is how I got the knowledge and courage to apply for the internship in the first place. The curriculum at the College of Liberal Arts has aided me by teaching me strong writing skills as well as research skills. Furthermore, the Job-Ready program was the whole reason I could do this internship since it was unpaid.

6.) Could you highlight a standout aspect of your experience in this program that you find particularly noteworthy?

A standout aspect of my experience in this program was the support I got from the Career Center. I can say without a doubt that I would not have been able to do this without them. They followed up with me and genuinely cared if I was succeeding. At Indy Eleven, my most noteworthy experience was meeting the live mascots (as pictured).
