Matthew Charles, Online Graduate Program Director 

Matt Charles is the new Online Graduate Program Director in Purdue’s Brian Lamb School of Communication. With decades of experience in crisis communication, Charles brings a deep understanding of trust-building, media relations, and proactive communication strategies. His career has included high-stakes roles such as a special investigator in New York City and media relations director at the University of Virginia, where he handled major crises, including the 2017 “Unite the Right” rally. 

Charles is the author of Shit Show: An Unexpected Life in Crisis Management, offering insights and lessons for crisis communication professionals. His global experience includes research in France and Japan, and he was recently appointed as a Fulbright Specialist for his work in communication and journalism. 

In his new role at Purdue, Charles oversees online graduate programs in communication, aiming to expand virtual learning opportunities and bring real-world crisis communication skills to students. He is passionate about meeting students where they are and equipping them with tools for success in today’s dynamic media landscape. 

Jennifer Richardson, Professor 

    Dr. Jennifer Richardson is a Professor in Purdue University’s College of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She holds a Ph.D. and C.A.S. in Educational Research and Program Evaluation from the University at Albany/SUNY, with additional master’s degrees in curriculum design, instructional technology, and educational policy. 

    Dr. Richardson specializes in instructional design and online learning, focusing on building community and engagement in digital environments. Recognized for her contributions, she has received awards from AERA, UPCEA, and Purdue, including the Mildred B. and Charles A. Wedemeyer Award for Outstanding Scholar in Distance Education. Her leadership in educational research and dedication to student success have made her a significant contributor to online education innovation. 

    Timothy Newby, Professor 

    Dr. Tim Newby earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology from Brigham Young University in 1984, following a B.S. in Psychology from the same institution. He is currently a Professor in the Learning Design and Technology program within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University. 

    Dr. Newby’s research focuses on learning and motivation, instructional strategies, and the use of technology in education. His recent work explores the impact of digital badges on learning and motivation in post-secondary settings. 
    He teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in online, hybrid, and face-to-face formats, covering topics such as Educational Technology, Instructional Strategies, Learning Theory, Motivation, and Instructional Design Theory. An accomplished author, Dr. Newby has published over 60 research articles and 16 books.
